POP20 – Aquamarine

From Aquamarine, UK-fanzine:

Although I encourage musical diversity, it’s not likely that one person is going to like everything on a label which releases lots of different styles. It’s therefore also good to see labels that have a disctinct «own sound» – you know that you can trust labels like this to release something you’re likely to like. Perfect Pop appears to be a label with a specific «label sound» – there’s quite a 60s feel to much of this stuff but not in an arrogant or fameseeking way, like much 60s influenced music from the mid/late 90s. This is more like 80s/early 90s indiepop bands who were influenced by the 60s – they had a much more genuine approach to their music, they made that sort of music because that’s what they liked/believed in, not because it was trendy (this sort of music was anything but trendy in fact). Most of the songs on this comp is jangly pop, kind of cute but in the best way. There are a couple of more obviously 60s-ish tracks which are more psychedelic than pop, but still fit in with the other songs. Lots of good stuff here, particularly the tracks by The Blind Bats, The Release Party, King Midas and The Time Lodgers, although I am somewhat disturbed by the latter’s pro-Hitler reference in one of their tracks; this completely spoils the song for me. (Note from Bartleby: This is not a «pro-Hitler reference»! There never has been or will be any neo-nazis in the Perfect Pop camp.) Also appearing are Monsters of Doom (who don’t sound as scary as their name suggests), Astroburger, The Bartlebees, The Tables, Todd Dillingham, The Loch Ness Mouse, The Silly Pillows and Robert Birdeye.
